Wed, 04 Jun 2014

Basketball coach Chris Facey was named Gillette London Coach of the Year at the London Sport Awards.

Chris is the Head Coach at Newham All Sports Academy charity, volunteering 25-30 hours a week working in schools and colleges. He has made a positive impact on young people by mixing basketball skills training and mini-tournaments with talks about the dangers of knife crime and gang culture.

Following his win, Chris will be short-listed with other regional finalists for the overall title of Gillette Community Coach of the Year at the 2014 UK Coaching Awards in Glasgow this November.

The other finalists were cycling coach John Gunn and swimming coach Scott Denham.

John has been a coach at Hillingdon Slipstreamers for 12 years. He has increased the number of sessions for under-16s and introduced a disability section at the club. He also organises young volunteer courses and has established links with the local community.

Scott coaches at Barking and Dagenham Aquatics Club. He has developed a delivery plan, which includes video training resources, that has been adopted by the borough. On top of his coaching work he runs land-training sessions, and attends galas.
