Mon, 09 Mar 2015

HRH The Princess Royal attended the launch of our Women into Coaching campaign aimed at boosting the number of females in coaching. sports coach UK’s patron met with elite coaches, who were taking part in the Women into High Performance Workshop, in Loughborough.

The session, the third in a series to develop coaches, raised awareness about and improve the coaching opportunities available to women. During her visit HRH took part in a discussion with a number of governing bodies of sport, identifying how they can apply the benefits of the programme more widely. sports coach UK, the country’s leading agency for coaching, believes that more women coaching offers more choice and more coaches, which means more women participating in sport.

Although women coaches account for 30% of the workforce overall, the number of qualified female coaches drops to 17%. sports coach UK has identified that lack of appropriate female coaches is one of the main barriers preventing women taking part in sport.

Helen Davey, deputy CEO of sports coach UK, said: “Our campaign is about women of all ages and backgrounds, coaching with real confidence, whilst having fun. Coaching not only helps women build leadership skills in the sporting arenas, but empowers them to reach out confidently in all aspects of their lives.

“As the UK’s leading agency for coaching we are working hard to tackle the gender imbalance present in coaching at all levels by supporting initiatives such as Project 500 which aims to train and develop hundreds of female coaches in the South East.”

Previous sessions, which were run in conjunction with partner organisations including Women in Sport and Sport England, have focussed on building strengths, personal brand, coaching philosophies, managing a team of coaches and talent development strategies.
