Coaching in the UK

How much do you know about young people?

Mon, 21 Mar 2016

What a great question for youth coaches to consider! How much do you know about why young people turn up to your session?

In collaboration with Sport England, we have created the second in a series of three animations looking at the motivations for taking part in a coaching session.

What motivates young people to be active?

Remember that all young people are different and will have different reasons for taking part, based on their different experiences, personality and lifestyle factors.

Recent insight from Sport England asked young people why they take part in sport or activity. The most common reasons included:

  • to meet new people
  • to hang out with friends
  • to get in shape
  • to be healthy
  • for fun and enjoyment
  • to learn new skills.

The challenge for coaches, activators and leaders is to plan and deliver sessions to meet these reasons for taking part.

Liz Burkinshaw, Development Lead Officer for Participation at sports coach UK said:

“This is a great new piece of bite-size learning for any youth coach, especially those working in satellite clubs and sportivate sessions. If you understand and deliver sessions that meet the reasons why young people turn up each week, they are more likely to come back again and again for experiences that are meaningful and worthwhile to them.”

Check out this short animation and accompanying support guide that helps solve this challenge for coaches, activators and leaders. Watch out for the third animation in the series 'How to coach young people when life changes' at the end of April 2016.
