Coaching in the UK

The Impact of the PE and Sport Premium

Tue, 09 Sep 2014

sports coach UK welcomes the latest research showing the impact of the Government’s £150M a year investment; we’re pleased to see that almost every school in England has been quick to make use of the money. We’re particularly pleased to note that coaching has played an important part in the Premium’s use, both in curriculum time PE and in school sport, thus contributing to a broader range of activities for children.

sports coach UK CEO Dr Tony Byrne commented: "We’re working closely with partners to ensure that coaches are able to support, not displace, teachers in curriculum time, allowing schools to offer more PE and school sport opportunities. These allow children to develop appropriate competitive skills and contribute to community participation opportunities for all children. We’re pleased to see the strong evidence that the Premium contributes to pupil confidence, health and fitness as this fits in with our holistic approach to the coaching of children.

"The report confirms that the use of external sports coaches in schools has more than doubled from 37% to 82%. We know that qualified and skilled coaches can offer sport-specific and multi-skills expertise to teachers, ensuring a sustainable use of the Primary PE and Sport Premium funding. Our Coaching in Primary Schools Portal provides head teachers with a valuable tool for the recruitment of appropriate local coaches."
