Coaching in the UK

Next Step for REPs as Sports Coach UK Purchases Fitness Register

Tue, 24 Jan 2017

As the sports and physical activity landscape changes and continues to draw further upon the need of coaching, Sports Coach UK is pleased to announce the purchase of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) in its entirety.

The purchase means 25,000+ registered members of REPs will continue to receive quality of service, protection and the opportunity for further relevant professional development and learning, ensuring they are properly equipped to meet the needs of their participants.

Changing customer needs means coaching is no longer solely about the acquiring and honing of sports skills. It is about improving a person’s experience of sport and physical activity by providing specialised support and guidance aligned to their individual needs and aspirations.

In order to deliver this, REPs will continue to work with industry experts and learning providers to support exercise professionals in delivering great experiences to inspire an active nation.

On the purchase, Gillian Wilmot, Chair of Sports Coach UK, said: “This is an exciting time for the industry and for our organisation as we continue on our mission to put coaching at the heart of sport and physical activity.

“Great coaching leads to great experiences and thousands of exercise professionals continue to provide these every day throughout the UK, motivating individuals to become and stay active.”

REPs was launched in 2002 to provide confidence to employers and the public that instructors and trainers meet the National Occupational Standards set by the industry. As well as protecting the public, the Register enhances the employment prospects of exercise professionals by recognising their skills and qualifications. For employers, it offers an efficient mechanism for verifying qualifications and ensuring the competence of staff, especially in the specialist areas linked to health rehabilitation.
