Through the programme, coaches will have opportunity to expand their knowledge, broaden their understanding, challenge their thinking, develop their insight and enhance their coaching practice by hearing from industry experts and meeting experienced coaches from the talent and high performance domain.

They will also receive support from UK Coaching’s team of coach developers: Alan Rapley, Kerry Gribble and Mark Bateman, all of whom have a deep understanding of performance sports coaching and learning. The developers will work with the coaches regionally, each having a base at an elite sporting hub across three locations; Alan at Loughborough, Kerry at Bisham Abbey and Mark at Lilleshall.

Iain Brunnschweiler, Strategic Lead for Talent and Performance at UK Coaching, said:

“We are delighted to introduce a brand new support programme for coaches operating at performance foundation level, in partnership with UK Sport. The programme utilises a new approach of deploying three regionally based, full-time coach developers to provide one-to-one support for each individual coach on the programme. In addition to this, they will facilitate local, regional and national cross-sport learning forums delivered over an 18-month period.

“We have the capacity to work with up to 72 coaches during the first 18-month period of the programme and will be working closely with the governing bodies of sports involved to understand their developmental principles, as to provide the best possible support for their coaches on the programme.

“Everyone at UK Coaching is excited to see this support programme up and running, and we look forward to working alongside UK Sport and governing bodies of sport in order to make the most of this opportunity, with the ultimate aim of providing outstanding coaching support.”

Diccon Edwards, Head of Coaching Development at UK Sport, said:

“UK Sport is proud to be working with UK Coaching on this exciting new programme.

“The initiative will help develop and nurture performance foundation coaches that are working with the next generation of athletes coming through the pathway.

“We are delighted with the scope and impact this initiative can have as it is hugely important that we support coaches throughout the pathway to be the best that they can possibly be.”
