UK Coaching celebrates the news that coaches will receive medals at World Championships

Thu, 27 Apr 2017

For the first time ever at a World Championships, coaches will receive medals alongside their athletes.

The organisers of the IAAF World Championships London 2017 announced the news on the 100-day mark before the Championships begin at the Olympic Stadium in August.

The coaches’ medal will be gifted to podium athletes, once they return from their medal ceremonies, to present to their coach or significant advisor in honour of their working relationship.

Mark Gannon, Chief Executive Officer for UK Coaching, said:

“We are very excited by news of the committee’s decision, supported by the IAAF, to present coaches with medals at the World Championships in London.

“The coach-athlete relationship is so unique but its value can often be overlooked. To have coaches at a major sporting event receive the same recognition as their athletes will demonstrate to a global audience the integral role a coach has in nurturing, and creating an environment where athletes can fulfil their potential.”
