sports coach UK welcomes recognition of role of PE

Fri, 20 Jun 2014

sports coach UK welcomes the importance placed on high-quality physical education and school sport and the role of coaching in the Ofsted Report Going the extra mile: excellence in competitive school sport.

We are delighted that the report recognises the vital role played by PE and school sport in enhancing whole school pupil attainment and the development of a positive school culture and ethos.  It comes as no surprise to us that the best performing State and independent schools have leadership that promotes the role of PE and school sport.

sports coach UK is committed to working with our partners including the Association for Physical Education, the County Sports Partnership Network, Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust to promote the role of PE and school sport in schools and help to ensure all children are afforded the opportunities to participate and compete in sport.  We also recognise the contribution of the School Games in providing competitive sporting opportunities for children in over 17,000 schools.

High-quality PE, the development of fundamental movement skills in Primary school and opportunities to take part in developmentally appropriate competitive sport are essential in ensuring that all children can fulfil their sporting potential and develop into physically literate lifelong participants.  sports coach UK believes that appropriately qualified and skilled sports coaches play a vital role, both in supporting teachers with curriculum time PE delivery and allowing schools to offer a broader range of extra-curricular activities and club link opportunities.

sports coach UK has worked with our partners to develop a free to access web-based Coaching in School Sport Portal. The portal provides guidance, tools and resources to support Head teachers and others, on the sustainable use of coaches through the Primary PE & Sport Premium. This enables Head Teachers and others to access reliable, technical, and objective advice on the recruitment of appropriately qualified and skilled sports coaches.
