Gerry Sutcliffe has backed Coach Inspire 2014, a sports coach UK high-performance coach-development initiative designed to increase Home Country medal success at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The programme, supported by UK Sport and the Home Country Sports Councils, is for coaches of athletes with a realistic podium place at the 2014 Games. It will provide a stepping stone for coaches to elite and world-class programmes and help retain high-performance coaches.

Selected coaches will have individualised development programmes based on their needs. They will also benefit from mentoring and hearing from high-performance coaches and managers, as well as CoachHub, an online education and communication tool.

Sutcliffe, a member of the Culture Media and Sport Select Committee and Minister for Sport under Labour, said: “sports coach UK is an important body leading the way for coaches and Coach Inspire 2014 is important for the Commonwealth Games - and continues the work of the last 10 years so that everyone can reach their potential, whether that’s elite athletes or people just coming into sport.”

Sutcliffe was one of a number of MPs to hear about the programme at a reception at Westminster hosted by sports coach UK entitled Excellent Coaching, Excellent Coaches.

The event also allowed them to meet inspirational award-winning coaches and to hear how having the right coaches with the right qualifications in the right places increases the number of people who participate and stay in sport - and improves performances.
