The Birmingham Way

Understanding Birmingham's citizens' needs, motivations and challenges to being more active is central to The Birmingham Way.

Led by Sport Birmingham, 'the Way' is an approach through coaching that ensures more people in Birmingham are getting active via great physical activity experiences.

By challenging traditional approaches to coaches and coaching,  'the Way' engaged many local and national partners in what is a great example of how Sport England's 'Coaching in an Active Nation' can be delivered locally.

Watch the animation and discover how 'the Way' tackles inactivity in Birmingham.

UK Coaching and Sport Birmingham invited local citizens, who take part in sport and physical activity sessions in Birmingham, to talk to them. During the talks the citizens shared their motivations and what they look for in a coach.

Participants and coaches from three sports and physical activity sessions were interviewed:

Participants:

  • Marlborough Junior School Parents - netball group
  • Runners from Hollywood Primary School - parents running group
  • Drum 'n' Bounce participants

Coaches:

  • Becky - Netball Activator, Sport Birmingham
  • Taz - Run Birmingham Activator
  • Emma - Dance Instructor, Drum 'n' Bounce

Here are their stories.
