‘Inclusive Coaching: Disability’

Organisation

County Durham Sports logo County Durham Sport works with various partners to help get more local people to take part in sport and physical activity, including providing training, access to funding and sharing best practice to support the development of high quality clubs, coaches, activity leaders and volunteers.

Background

Karen Williams, Coaching Development Manager at County Durham Sport, the county sports partnership (CSP) for County Durham, works with governing bodies of sport and partners to identify gaps in coach provision and look to offer appropriate training to meet needs. They identified that there was a need to increase the number of coaches in County Durham who are able to incorporate inclusive coaching into their sessions and therefore increase participation in sport.

Solution

County Durham Sport decided to run the workshop ‘Inclusive Coaching: Disability’ at the end of March 2012. As it was the first time they had run the workshop, Karen and her team spent a bit more time ensuring people knew what it entailed as they would be less familiar with it than some of their more regularly scheduled workshops, such as ‘Safeguarding and Protecting Children’ and ‘An Introduction to the FUNdamentals of Movement’. They got in touch with their partners to explain what the workshop involved and what the benefits were, to encourage people to get involved in promoting the workshop.

They also identified attendees from conversations and feedback they had recieved. For example, one governing body of sport wanted to include more disabled athletes so the details of the workshop were passed on, to be given to relevant coaches within that sport.

Results

County Durham Sport were pleased with the results of their initial ‘Inclusive Coaching: Disability’workshop. The coaches found it informative and thought-provoking, and it helped them learn about the classifications in disability sport as well as the pathways for disabled participants. They also looked at how they could adapt their current delivery methods according to the needs of the participants, enabling them to start implementing what they had learnt straight away.

'We will definitely be running the ‘Inclusive Coaching: Disability’ workshop again, and I would thoroughly recommend it to other CSPs. It was well received by the coaches and proved to be an informative and practical course.'
