Coaching in the UK

Children Specialist Coaching

The number of governing bodies of sport actively looking to develop a children-specialist workforce has grown dramatically over the last few months.

Examples of these include:

  • the Rugby Football League
  • the Rugby Football Union
  • the Amateur Swimming Association
  • British Cycling
  • British Gymnastics
  • England Netball
  • The Football Association
  • UK Athletics.

The governing bodies are tailoring resources to train coaches of children - such as UKCC Level -1 and Level -2 courses and the development of specialist CPD - according to the needs of their sport. The common theme is a total commitment and desire to provide the best possible coaches for the children and young people that take part in their sport.

sports coach UK published an industry-wide Coaching Children Action Plan for 2010-13 in January 2011 after consulting with key stakeholders such as:

  • the Youth Sport Trust
  • the Association for Physical Education
  • the Child Protection in Sport Unit
  • the Home Country Sport Councils
  • cross-industry representatives including local authorities, county sport partnerships, school sport partnerships and governing bodies of sport.

One of the key priorities identified in the plan was the creation of a Coaching Children Curriculum to pave the way for the creation of specialised development opportunities for children’s coaches.

sports coach UK will continue to support governing bodies to fulfil their children’s-coaching objectives.
