Coaching in the UK

Liz Nicholl's Summit Challenge

UK Sport Chief Executive Liz Nicholl OBE has issued a challenge to decision makers and educators in coaching to realise the target of a world-class coaching development system in the UK.

Speaking to delegates at the 2011 UK Coaching Summit in Belfast she also underlined UK Sport’s commitment to coach development and the importance of coaching in achieving podium success.

The head of the UK’s high-performance sport agency said: “Quality coaching is fundamental to British sporting success, and elite coach development continues to sit at the heart of UK Sport’s high-performance strategy.

“However, providing the much needed leadership in coach development at a UK wide level is also a priority for UK Sport.

“In the coming 12-18 months, as we are developing our strategy to take us beyond London 2012 and an even closer relationship with Sport England and the other home country sports councils, we have licence to think differently, break boundaries and work to develop a world leading, connected and respected sporting system.”

She added: “We all as system builders, decision makers and coach educators share a desire to establish the best coaching development system in the world; one which reflects a progressive coaching landscape, championed by all, each sport with its own clear and coherent pathway and the best coaches supporting participants and athletes at all levels of British sport. Let’s make it our reality.”
