Coaching in the UK

Vounteer Role Highlighted

Incoming Sport and Recreation Alliance Chair Andy Reed says addressing the capacity of volunteers and volunteering is important if sport is to meet the ideals of The Big Society.

Speaking at the 2011 UK Coaching Summit in Belfast he highlighted human capital as a key challenge, noting a shortage of volunteers and an over reliance on club stalwarts as potential problems.

One solution he suggested is to target those most likely to volunteer and give their time.

During discussion, the critical importance of making life simpler for volunteers was also highlighted. People are more likely to give small chunks of their time if no bureaucratic barriers are put in their way.

The capacity of volunteers is relevant to coaching. Research from sports coach UK found that 76 per cent of the 1.1 million coaches in the UK are volunteers.
