Title: Badminton SmashUp Activator and Level 1 Football Coach and Referee

Why I Chose to Attend this Workshop:

"I’d recently qualified as a SmashUp activator for Badminton England, which is a way of delivering badminton to secondary schools and further education (FE) colleges. My background though was coaching children aged between six and 10 so this was a new age group for me. As I hadn’t coached for some time, I thought ‘How to Deliver Engaging Sessions for Young People’ would be an excellent chance to refresh my skills while also learning how to coach young people. In addition, I was already volunteering at Sport BU with table tennis, badminton, football and netball so I thought the workshop would also help me in this capacity."

"This was such a fun and informative workshop that I would have no hesitation in recommending it to all coaches. Having the course delivered by someone so knowledgeable and passionate about coaching added to the experience as his enthusiasm oozed across the course, and he was very infectious. It’s had a massive impact on the way I coach, with attendance and retention at my sessions improving dramatically. I found it fascinating that so many of the ideas and games are transferable to your own sport. It speaks volumes that I would go again!"

How the Workshop Impacted on my Coaching:

"It’s had a massive impact on the way I coach! In particular, learning about the ‘C’ system of coaching was extremely valuable. It taught me to reflect and think back on each of my coaching sessions and the importance of evaluating them. I am now able to look at my sessions and see what’s not quite working, and if the young people aren’t engaging, I can adapt there and then.

"Where it’s had the most impact though is how I now engage more with my young people about the sessions I plan to deliver. I encourage them to become more involved and let them have some input, or even lead aspects of the session, which is something I hadn’t previously thought of. So I’ll now show them the session I had planned for the day, see what they think and give them the chance to have their input and put forward their ideas, which I’ll then incorporate into what I deliver.

"The attendance and retention at my coaching sessions has improved so dramatically that it’s almost reached the point where I have to ask the school to find me a bigger hall, which is brilliant!"

Why I Would Recommend the Workshop:

"‘How to Deliver Engaging Sessions for Young People’ is such a fun and informative workshop that I would have no hesitation in recommending it to all coaches. Having the course delivered by someone so knowledgeable and passionate about coaching added to the experience as his enthusiasm oozed across the course, and he was very infectious. It was also a great chance to meet up with other coaches from different sports and share ideas. I was the only one from my sport so it was helpful to watch others and pick up hints and tips on how they would deliver a session in the practical part of the workshop. It’s fascinating that so many of the ideas and games are transferable to your own sport. You also get a resource to take away, which is great as it gives you the chance to review later what you learnt on the day. I think, no matter how old you are, or how long you have been coaching, you never stop learning.

"It speaks volumes that I would go again!"
