UK Coaching Comment on UK Sport and Sport England’s Policy Response to the Whyte Review

UK Coaching acknowledges the policy response to the Whyte Review from UK Sport and Sport England, who yesterday published 19 commitments across the five areas of: coaching and workforce support, performance athlete support, good governance, dispute resolution, and creating safer environments for participants

The commitments within the response will help improve the experience of physical activity and sport for all involved. As the only independent UK organisation representative of coaches across all physical activity and sport, and at all levels, UK Coaching provides a comprehensive package of support to coaches, including essential coach learning and development opportunities, and support and guidance to coaches when it is needed most.

Millions of people regularly enjoy a positive experience of coaching. We applaud those who have bravely come forward to share their negative experiences in a bid to drive change in those areas that need it. The importance of the Whyte Review is considerable and has learnings across all sports.

Coaches play a vital role in the need to drive more active communities. Their benefit to millions of people, individually and societally, is considerable and they should be valued and supported by the sector. Our role is to work with other partners to help improve the experience for all. We all have a responsibility to work together to ensure that the system is fair and all parties are protected from harm. The only way to achieve this is to work together to understand the challenges, share the learnings and make changes for the better, for everyone.

We look forward to working with UK Sport, Sport England and the other partners to further develop a system that better protects all involved in physical activity and sport.
