UK Coaching supports 10th National School Sport Week

Children’s charity the Youth Sport Trust has joined forces with UK Coaching to get hundreds of thousands of young people across the UK to take part in a week-long celebration of play and sport

National School Sport Week (NSSW) takes place between 25 to 29 June and is led by children’s charity the Youth Sport Trust. UK Coaching will be taking part in this year’s theme ‘celebrating the role of play and sport in education’ by supporting the charity to reach more children and young people than ever.

Now in its 10th year, it has never been more important to showcase the importance of play, PE and school sport; delivered in the right way they hold the potential to address declining physical, social and emotional wellbeing among children and support them to achieve more both in and outside the classroom.

UK Coaching’s Development Lead Officer for Children, David Turner, said:

On behalf of UK Coaching, I would like to extend my support for National School Sport Week. It’s testament to the work the Youth Sport Trust undertake and their mission to build bright futures for young people that this initiative is 10 years-old.

“As an organisation, we advocate PE and school sport delivered through great coaching experiences to equip children for healthy and active lifestyles and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport. We’ve created guidance via our Coaching in Primary Schools Toolkit to help schools use funding like the Primary PE and Sport Premium to employ coaches to support and up-skill teachers in the technical aspects of sporting skills.”

There will be the chance for schools to win a visit from one of the Youth Sport Trust’s inspirational athlete mentors over the course of the week by sharing their best photos on social media celebrating play and sport in line with this year’s theme.

Ali Oliver, Chief Executive Officer at the Youth Sport Trust, said:

We are really excited to this year be celebrating a decade of delivering National School Sport Week. Play, PE and sport hold the key to opening so many doors for young people so we are proud to be partnering with UK Coaching to celebrate sport and play’s transformative powers.

“This year we are also campaigning to transform secondary physical education and its place in the curriculum. Like English and Maths, PE should be part of the bedrock of a good education which equips young people with vital skills to nurture wellbeing, get them ready to learn, and develop the life skills needed for employment.”
