How to Coach the Fundamentals of Movement

For coaches who work with all ages and abilities – helping nurture physically confident children and adults

We have integrated a new and improved coaching model into our popular practical-based workshop, where you will learn how to teach fundamental movement skills (FMS) in order to develop physical literacy – key to nurturing healthy and active lifestyles.

All coaches who work with children and young people should have an understanding and knowledge of how to implement fundamental movement skills, which underpin successful participation in a wide variety of sporting activities. This workshop will equip you with the confidence to incorporate key elements into every one of your sessions – irrespective of the age group you coach. It is also ideal CPD for Primary School teachers.

The workshop has been updated to reflect the latest thinking presented in the Youth Physical Development Model (YPDM). It uses as its framework the latest evidence-based research that isolates which movements and competencies children should have at particular stages in their development, right through to adulthood.

You will learn to:

  • understand what fundamental movement skills are and why they are important
  • understand the process of observing and correcting movement skill competency
  • design and deliver warm-ups that promote movement skill development
  • design and deliver body weight management training exercises that promote developmentally appropriate movement skill development.

You will receive a digital copy of How to Coach the Fundamentals of Movement to guide you in your future coaching. The 38-page resource includes chapters on:

  • Male Youth Physical Development Model
  • Female Youth Physical Development Model
  • What are fundamental movement skills (FMS)?
  • How FMS underpin physical and movement qualities that allow people to engage in and enjoy sport
  • What does movement competency look like?
  • Developing Fundamentals during the warm-up: The A–Z of animal shapes.
  • Developing Fundamentals via body weight management training: shapes, positions and sports acro.

Coaches might also be interested in our Coaching Children 5-12: The Next Generation workshop. Together with our Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop and the How to Coach the Fundamentals of Movement, this forms part of a mini-suite of workshops that will help coaches in their journey towards becoming an outstanding all-round children’s coach.

Fundamental movement skills play an important role in the delivery of the PE national curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2 and will be ideal CPD for Primary School Teachers.

The 3-hour workshop has been updated to reflect the latest thinking presented in the Youth Physical Development Model (YPDM) and replaces our four-workshop FUNdamentals of Movement suite.

Organisers might also be interested in our Coaching Children 5-12: The Next Generation workshop. Together with our Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop and the How to Coach the Fundamentals of Movement, this forms part of a mini-suite of workshops that will help coaches in their journey towards becoming an outstanding all-round children’s coach.

How will How to Coach the Fundamentals of Movement support the delivery of your strategic objectives?

We understand that the partners we work with have a range of different objectives and outcomes that you want to achieve. In our experience, often they are one or more of the following, which all require engaging, person-centered coaching:

  • Engage the least active people in sport and physical activity.
  • Sustain membership.
  • Create a love of activity in children and young people.
  • Help performers to strive for their best.

How to Coach the Fundamentals of Movement helps coaches to deliver fun and engaging sessions to children that help them develop fundamental movement skills and the required bodyweight strength training to minimise the risk of injuries in young people.

The workshop content and supporting resource have been developed in partnership with leading coaching children practitioners and researchers to give coaches all the information that they need to provide the appropriate training for young people at all stages of development. They also introduce the Youth Physical Development Model.

Does this link to the Coaching Plan for England?

The Coaching Plan for England defines coaching as “improving a person’s experience of sport and physical activity by providing specialised support and guidance aligned to their individual needs and aspirations.”

How to Coach the Fundamentals of Movement provides an interactive practical learning experience to help coaches understand child development and to facilitate the development of appropriate physical qualities. We believe this workshop will help to not only improve the participant’s experience, but will also help to drastically reduce the risk of injuries that prevent long-term participation in sport and physical activity.

How does How to Coach the Fundamentals of Movement link to the Professional Standards for Coaching?

The Professional Standards for Coaching set out the skills, knowledge and behaviour needed to maximise the participant experience. This workshop has been designed to specifically meet outcomes from the Coaching Children Population Professional Standard.

Is this learning only for people who provide coaching, or does it have a broader appeal?

The learning package has been developed primarily to support those people coaching in sport and physical activity settings. However, the learning does have broader appeal and the themes could easily be applied to Physical Education and adult participation.

If you are interested in having the learning package delivered to a broader audience, then please get in touch with the Relationship Management Team at UK Coaching to make your specific request.

Can I tailor/bespoke this workshop?

The workshop has been carefully designed to be about ‘children’ rather than any specific sport, activity or age range. Examples and scenarios can be adapted to make learning more relevant and applicable to those coaches engaging in the learning.

Workshop delivery can also be tailored to meet the needs of specific coaching audiences through the tutor delivery, the examples used and the activities offered. When you make your booking, let us know what areas you would like to be dealt with specifically, and we will embed them within the remit of the workshop learning challenges.

If you are a not yet a Licensed Workshop Partner and would like to make the content bespoke, please request this prior to booking. This may incur an additional fee.

If you want to mix and match content from this learning package with other workshops, then please request this prior to booking. This is likely to incur an additional fee.

What People Think

The workshop is an evolution on what has gone before and we are hoping delegates will enjoy the new approach. We are confident that what we have put together has a strong evidence base. The feedback from those organisations we have trialled the workshop with has been extremely positive.

Dr Jon Oliver, Co-founder of the Youth Physical Development Model around which the workshop has been designed.

Integrating fundamentals into my coaching practice has reinforced how essential they are in skill development, participant engagement and sport performance. The course has allowed me to develop greater awareness of the importance and role of fundamentals when coaching children and adults through experiential learning and to be able to design related activities for use in the practice setting.

Richard Cheetham OBE, Senior Fellow in Sports Coaching, the University of Winchester
