Overview
The 1st4sport Level 3 Award for Tutors and Assessors in Sport is recognised as the minimum industry standard qualification for tutors and assessors in sport.
Designed to prepare you for deployment as a tutor and assessor, it provides an opportunity to gain confirmation of your knowledge in your chosen area as well as to equip you with the necessary skills to become a tutor and assessor in sport.
You will:

This qualification is intended for anyone with technical competence in the subject area/sport in which you wish to become involved in the delivery and assessment of.
If you’re interested in becoming a tutor and assessor, including for sports coaching programmes, as part of a governing body of sport education workforce, or for generic sports qualifications, then this qualification will be the perfect first step.
It will enable you to seek roles in the tutoring and assessing of sports coaching programmes, as part of a governing body of sport education workforce or for generic sport qualifications.
This qualification supports direct progression onto the following qualifications:
- 1st4sport Level 3 Award in Delivering Learning.
- 1st4sport Level 3 Award in Education and Training.
- 1st4sport Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement.
- 1st4sport Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment.
- 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement.
It also enables you to progress onto other industry-relevant qualifications in physical activity, activity leadership, and supporting PE in school sport and sports development.
Prior to registration, you must be:
- accurately identified (this involves providing some identifying information about yourself, such as your passport or driving licence, so that the recognised centre can verify that you are the person who has registered for the qualification )
- at least 18 years of age
- hold a relevant vocational sports qualification that is in the subject area/sport that you aspire to tutor and assess, and that is at least at Level 3
- able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing). If you have any additional support requirements to help you through this qualification, please speak to the recognised centre* delivering your course.
*A recognised centre is an organisation who is accredited by 1st4sport to deliver qualifications.
To obtain the qualification, you must:
- attend a course of training and assessment and show that you can meet all the learning outcomes and assessment criteria (usually via successful completion of all assessed tasks found in a formal set of documents or resource pack you will receive at the beginning of your course: the 1st4sport Learning Portfolio)
- deliver teaching and conduct assessment
- engage in reflective practice.
To obtain the qualification, you must successfully complete both mandatory components and one pathway component.
This will involve creating a portfolio of evidence including:
- completing a series of assessed tasks
- tutoring activities and session plans
- a personal development plan
- reflective practice.
