1st4sport Level 3 Award in Workforce Mentoring
Provides the knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of mentoring people in physical activity and sport
Overview
The 1st4sport Level 3 Award in Workforce Mentoring is designed to give you an overview of the principles and practice of workforce mentoring.
It covers:
- understanding mentoring theories and models
- creating and implementing a mentee agreement
- understanding boundaries of the mentoring role
- planning, delivering, and evaluating 6 hours of mentoring interventions with two mentees
- managing intervention records
- measuring success of interventions towards defined targets.
By learning more about the principles and practice of workforce mentoring through this qualification, you can develop your knowledge and skills with the view of building a career in this area.
For mentors working within the Coach Development workforce, this qualification is recognised by UK Coaching and National Governing Bodies of sport and will enable you to seek paid or voluntary roles in workforce mentoring.

It is suitable for:
- people who currently have responsibilities within their job roles of mentoring colleagues or people from other organisations
- people who want to enter the mentoring workforce.
Importantly, you must have access to a minimum of two mentees who have defined targets/areas by their organisation.
This qualification will enable you to progress to other 1st4sport Education and Training Suite qualifications, or other higher-level coaching and/or mentoring qualifications.
Prior to registration, you must be:
- accurately identified (this involves providing some identifying information about yourself, such as your passport or driving licence, so that the recognised centre can verify that you are the person who has registered for the qualification)
- be at least 18 years of age
- be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing). If you have any additional support requirements to help you through this qualification, please speak to the recognised centre* delivering your course
- have the support of an organisation willing to give access to two members of their workforce (paid or voluntary) to be mentored over a minimum of three months each, and an appropriate supervisor for the trainee mentor. (The mentees can be from different organisations.)
*A recognised centre is an organisation who is accredited by 1st4sport to deliver qualifications.
To obtain the qualification, you must attend your training and have assessed evidence of:
- an appropriate understanding of the knowledge in the units and the theory underpinning workforce mentoring, assessed via performance, tasks and assignments
- a record of the mentoring agreements for two mentees
- having conducted an initial assessment of mentee needs, for two mentees.
To obtain the qualification, you must successfully complete two mandatory units and meet identified assessment criteria.
