Overview
The 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement is recognised as the industry standard vocational skills assessing qualification for the further education and skills sector by the Education and Training Foundation. Obtaining this qualification will prove your learners' ability to assess knowledge-based qualifications and vocational qualifications in non-work environments.
This qualification is suitable for:
- current learning and development practitioners
- those new to the role of assessor
- people aspiring to assess work-based competency qualifications

The qualification is designed for current learning and development practitioners and those new to the role of assessor.
It will enable you to seek employment in appropriate paid or voluntary assessing roles within your specialist subject area, assessing:
- competence-based qualifications such as NVQs
- knowledge-based qualifications
- vocational qualifications that are assessed in a non-work environment.
Please note you must have access within your current role to assess learners for qualifications, programmes of study with assessment, or job-related assessments in the relevant environments. Prior to accessing a programme of learning, you must be 19 years of age or above.
With further experience in assessment practice, this qualification will enable you to progress to the 1st4sport Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice.
Prior to registration, you must:
- be accurately identified (this involves providing some identifying information about yourself, such as your passport or driving licence, so that the recognised centre can verify that you are the person who has registered for the qualification)
- be at least 19 years of age
- be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing). If you have any additional support requirements to help you through this qualification, please speak to the Recognised Centre* delivering your course.
- have access to assess both non-work environment qualifications/assessments and work environment qualifications/assessments.
*A recognised centre is an organisation who is accredited by 1st4sport to deliver qualifications.
To obtain the qualification, you must attend your training and show that you can meet all the learning outcomes and assessment criteria (usually via successful completion of all assessed tasks found in a formal set of documents or resource pack you will receive at the beginning of your course: the 1st4sport Learning Portfolio).
You will have to complete three mandatory units to obtain this qualification.
This will involve having assessed evidence of:
- an appropriate knowledge an understanding of assessing occupational competence and vocational achievement, assessed via performance, tasks and assignments
- planning, conducting and reviewing learning assessments
- observation of assessment practice
- delivery of four planned assessments for two learners on a non-work environment qualification
- delivery of four planned assessments for two learners on a work environment qualification.
