Overview
The 1st4sport Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice is recognised as the industry standard vocational skills assessing qualification for the further education and skills sector by the Education and Training Foundation. Obtaining this qualification will confirm your learners ability to complete internal quality assurance of assessments.
This qualification is suitable for experienced learning and development practitioners currently in the role of assessor.
Importantly, your learners must have access in thier current role to:
- internally quality assurance assessments for qualifications
- accredited programmes of study with assessments
- job-related assessments in the relevant environment.

The qualification is designed for experienced Learning and Development practitioners currently practicing as an assessor. You must have access within your current role to internally quality assure assessments for qualifications, accredited programmes of study with assessments, or job-related assessments in the relevant environment. Prior to accessing a programme of learning, you must be 19 years of age or above and hold an assessing qualification.
This qualification will enable you to seek employment in paid or voluntary Internal Quality Assurance roles to internally quality assure assessments within your specialist subject area.
It will also enable you to progress to the 1st4sport Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice, provided that you have:
- further experience in internal quality assurance
- responsibility in your current role for coordinating/leading a team of internal quality assurers.
Prior to registration, you must be:
- accurately identified (this involves providing some identifying information about yourself, such as your passport or driving licence, so that the recognised centre can verify that you are the person who has registered for the qualification)
- at least 19 years of age
- be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing). If you have any additional support requirements to help you through this qualification, please speak to the Recognised Centre* delivering your course.
- hold an assessing qualification
- have access to internal quality assurance opportunities.
*A recognised centre is an organisation who is accredited by 1st4sport to deliver qualifications.
To obtain this qualification, you must have assessed evidence of:
- appropriate knowledge and understanding of internal quality assurance, assessed via performance, tasks and assignments
- having produced or reviewed an internal quality assurance (IQA) strategy and provide a rationale
- having produced or reviewed a sampling plan with a rationale
- having produced individual IQA plans for two assessors, assessing two learners each (four learners in total)
- delivery of the IQA interventions of the two assessors and outcome paperwork and IQA reports
- self-evaluation of IQA practice.
You will have to complete two mandatory units and meet identified assessment criteria to obtain this qualification.
This involves:
- completing a series of written tasks contained within the Learner Portfolio
- producing or reviewing an IQA strategy and providing a rationale
- producing or reviewing a sampling plan with a rationale
- planning and delivering the IQA interventions.
