CIMSPA CPD valid for 12 months

On this workshop/ online classroom, raise your awareness of the tell-tale signs of abuse, and gain the tools and confidence needed to deal with any issues sensitively, appropriately, and effectively

Developed in partnership with NSPCC and CPSU, and funded by Sport England

Overview

Every child deserves to enjoy playing sport and engaging in physical activity in a safe and supportive environment, where they feel heard, understood, and valued.

This interactive face-to-face workshop / online classroom will help you recognise and respond to concerns a child may be experiencing, or be at risk of experiencing, harm, neglect, or abuse.

You will learn the importance of person-centred care and taking an individualised approach to your coaching practice that puts the child or young person at the heart of every session.

More than half a million coaches have been through our Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop / online classroom (which launched in 1995), enabling them to provide a positive and enriching experience of physical activity and sport for all children.

UK Coaching works in partnership with the NSPCC and CPSU to regularly review and develop the course content and materials to ensure the learning content, guidance and delivery is current.

  • Updated in April 2022, the guidance and scenarios provided will prompt you to reflect on what it means to be a child today, and to consider the impact and implications on your coaching practice.
  • You will learn techniques to help you develop a child-centred philosophy that positively contributes to ensuring safe practice and creating a safe environment that meets the needs and protects the welfare of all children.

Through interactive scenarios and discussions with people from different sports and activities, you will have the opportunity to explore the consequences of those decisions in a safe and supportive environment, helping to increase your confidence to deal with safeguarding issues effectively and counteract the latest threats to emerge that could impact on the physical or mental health of children in modern Britain.

The course has been awarded 2 CPD points by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

On this course you will:

  • Identify and recognise good coaching practice and the implications for your coaching.
  • Refresh your knowledge around recognising safeguarding issues, what to do, and just as importantly, what not to do.
  • Explore your values and feelings in relation to child abuse, and recognise their potential impact on your response.
  • Take appropriate action if concerns about a child arise.
  • Learn from and pick the brains of our expert tutors, all of whom have lived Safeguarding experience – such as club welfare officers, schoolteachers, or police officers.

Minimum Deployment Requirements

Safeguarding is a ‘Minimum Deployment Requirement' for many governing bodies of sport. The ‘Minimum Deployment Requirements’ are seen as the basic standards every coach needs to meet to carry out their role safely and effectively. It can also be attended by all those responsible for organising children’s sport (such as within governing bodies of sport, local authorities, sports and leisure centres, and sports clubs) and those who lead or deliver children’s sport programmes (such as coaches, leaders, instructors, development officials, administrators, volunteers and parents), an estimated 76% of whom undertake these roles on a voluntary basis.

Check with your governing body of sport for further information, and to ascertain whether or not attendance at a safeguarding workshop / online classroom is required before you commence coaching. Governing bodies of sport set their own standards for safeguarding training. The NSPCC’s recommendation is that anyone with regular responsibility for children and young people should undertake face-to-face training and the same applies to the Minimum Deployment Requirements.

Face-to-face training allows delegates to ask questions in a safe environment facilitated by a qualified safeguarding tutor. It also provides the opportunity to discuss specific safeguarding issues that arise during the training. Refresher training is available online. Recommended to be completed at three-yearly intervals.

Really good classroom, would definitely recommend. Learnt loads.

Well presented, full of useful information, ideas and scenarios.

Very clear; well laid out; good environment and helpful.

Good course, very helpful and thought-provoking.

Very informative and relaxed.

Engaging and interesting to explore different scenarios and what action to take: I learnt a lot. Thank-you!

Excellent delivery and interaction. Really good content. Great starting point for someone like me taking over as club welfare officer.

The presentation was very easy to follow/understand and the online discussions raised several questions that you might not have thought about.

I would not hesitate to recommend this course to my coaches and poolside helpers.

Perfect! It was quick, simple, and easy and I understood every point that was put across.

Very clear and informative, better than being in a classroom.

Very well made and interactive course, giving information on key topics of safeguarding.

Testimonial on the Safeguarding and Protecting Children course

Safeguarding is a key responsibility for anyone involved in children’s sport, and the Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshops and online classrooms ensure that staff and volunteers, either in coaching roles or supporting roles, have the knowledge and understanding that they need to fulfil this responsibility. The NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit fully supports the updated courses to ensure people are equipped to recognise and respond to any concerns children may have in and out of sport, which will lead to safer places for children and young people to enjoy sport and physical activity.
