Primary School Physical Literacy Framework

Physical literacy is the foundation for lifelong activity

Physical literacy can be described as the motivation, confidence, competence, knowledge and understanding that provides children with the movement foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity. By enabling children to be physically literate, we can support their development as competent, confident and healthy movers.

Developing physical literacy is the foundation of PE and school sport and is an outcome of any structured PE and school sport provision. It can be achieved more readily if learners encounter a range of age- and stage-appropriate opportunities.

To promote better understanding of physical literacy, UK Coaching (formely Sports Coach UK) worked with our National Partners to produce a Physical Literacy Framework in Autumn 2013.

The Physical Literacy Framework

The framework has been designed to support those working in primary schools to consider how best
they can structure their PE and school sport provision to ensure maximum opportunity is provided to
develop the physical literacy of all their pupils
