‘Embracing Messiness’ with Burnley Goalkeeping Coach Fabian Otte

UK Coaching Senior Coach Developer Marianne Davies spoke with Fabian to discuss skill acquisition and utilising a constraints-led approach in coaching goalkeeping

After 10 years of actively playing and coaching in five different countries and on three continents, Fabian Otte is now working as the First Team Assistant and Transition Goalkeeper Coach at Burnley Football Club in the English Premier League.

Alongside his-full time coaching job, he is also about to finish a PhD at the German Sport University in Cologne. Clearly, he is used to handling multiple projects, and as adept at juggling work demands as he is controlling flying footballs!

Fabian explained that what drives him is a desire to see practice informing research, and theory being transferred into practice.

Meeting so many people with such different cultural backgrounds really got Fabian into ecological dynamics and using a constraints-led approach in his coaching practice.
