Maximising Potential: Strategies for Developing a Successful High-Performance Team

Blake Richardson reviews Dr Steve Ingham’s keynote presentation at the 2020 UK Coaching Applied Research Conference, in which he shared some of the secrets of his success as a world-leading performance scientist who has played an integral role in assisting the careers of some of Great Britain’s most decorated athletes

Dr Steve Ingham used the 2012 London Olympic Games as the backdrop for his keynote presentation exploring the key tensions, philosophies and concepts that underpin exceptional performance.

Specifically, it was his work with Toni Minichiello and Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, and the meticulous preparation that went into her tilt at heptathlon gold in her home Games, that came under the microscope.

For those on the outside looking in, eager for a glimpse into the fascinating world of high performance sport and the function of the support team which operates invisibly but indispensably in the background, there were some revelatory insights and lots of valuable learning to be acquired from the ‘Team Jennis’ storyline.
