The GP-Trainer Relationship: Beneficial for All

Miranda Markham finds out what fitness professionals can do to improve their links with local health professionals, and why collaboration between GPs and PTs is the best result for clients requiring referral

Get the right trainer dealing with the right client and you’re a long way to solving a problem like referral, not to mention addressing the needs of the client in question.

As with most problems in the fitness industry, the solution begins with people.

“If you are a gym offering exercise referral, you need to have the correct people in place – the ones who really want to work with specialist populations. It’s not always about upskilling existing staff,” says Future Fit Training’s Regional Team Leader Anthony Cozier.

With more than 20 years of industry experience, he says employing a team of generalist PTs is not the answer, especially in local authority gyms delivering referral.

“Referral is a very different type of PT.”
