Disordered Eating: Language in the Training and Competition Environment

In the fourth part of our series on disordered eating, Dr Carolyn Plateau from Loughborough University discusses how language can be a powerful tool in the prevention of eating problems. She shares some hints and tips on how coaches and the wider coaching team can be mindful of their language in the training and competition environment

How we communicate about food, weight, body size and shape can make an important contribution to the wider cultural environment.

Coaches have a responsibility to create a positive culture within which participants train and compete.

The language and behaviours of coaches and the wider coaching team can influence how participants feel about their bodies, as well as shape their eating behaviours and impact upon their well-being. Being mindful of what we say and how we discuss food, weight and shape is an important step towards developing a healthy physical activity and sport environment.
