How to Set Effective Goals With Your Participants

In the third of four resources on goal setting, Trish Jackman and Matthew Bird explain the four stages of goal setting and how to apply these with your participants to set effective goals

The first two resources in this series introduce and demystify the goal-setting process. Use this guide to develop your knowledge about each of the four stages of the process, so that you can use what you’ve learned to better support the people you coach.

1) The preparation stage

The preparation stage of the goal-setting process involves conducting a needs analysis. This will enable you to:

  • identify areas a participant should work on
  • understand their motives, reasons for change, and why they want to achieve their ‘ultimate goal’.

This is supported by understanding how to effectively set goals.
