Children Rapport Building and Communicating

Managing the Doting Parent

Parents who ‘dote’ on their children are extremely, uncritically fond of them and tend to spoil them terribly, which can have consequences for the child and impact on the coach’s own relationship with the parent. So, how do you react and respond appropriately?

As coaches, we will come across many different types of parent, from the one who is perhaps too laid back to the one who is always in your face and extremely pushy with everything surrounding their children.

This is not about putting our parents into ‘boxes’ but as coaches you may have to adapt some of your methods and approaches to meet the needs of the individual and gain the best outcome for the athlete. Remember they are and should always be central to everyone’s thinking and decision making.
