The Relationship Between Match Flow, Momentum and Performance

When you watch a competitive game you often see the game move from a finely balanced contest to one team becoming dominant, or a shift from one performer winning to another taking advantage. Many terms are used to describe participants who recognise, respond and react to changing situations within a competition or game. It’s often put down to experience or a natural sense, yet these skills can and should be developed within a coaching programme.

The benefits to participants are that:

  • they develop an appreciation of the demands of the game
  • they learn to make decisions in matches based on the state of the game
  • they can develop their tactical and mental skills.
