Things to Do When You Join a New Interdisciplinary Team

Throughout the series, Jason Tee has highlighted crucial components of successful interdisciplinary teamwork. In this resource, Jason summarises the key messages of the series into a handy ‘tip sheet’ for anyone moving into a new team environment

Understanding the structure, process, and challenges essential to interdisciplinary teamwork will help you to contribute effectively to your team. Following the steps below will ensure you have a great start with your new team members.

Connection before content

Working in an interdisciplinary team means working with people who have different views from yourself. It's important to establish some common ground with the other team members so that you can navigate ‘spaces’ where disagreements occur.

Building relationships and having social capital with your fellow team members is essential. The first step is to discuss the overall vision and philosophy with the interdisciplinary team leader. This will help you to understand the principles of behaviour that direct the team.

Then arrange some one-on-one time with each of the interdisciplinary team members that you will be working with. Remember, people don’t naturally open up and share in initial meetings, but most people do feel flattered when someone takes the time and shows an interest in them and their role.
