Understanding and Reflecting on Your Identity and Self-Concept

In the first of a series of eight resources, Performance Psychology Consultant Philippa McGregor explores self-concept and identity, poses some intriguing questions and encourages you to take the time to reflect on your own identity, who you are and what you stand for

One of the consistent elements of great coaches, regardless of the level they are working at, is that they take time to invest in themselves. Not only from a learning and development perspective but in truly starting to explore and understand who they are as a person.

Get yourself something to write some notes on before you read and find a good space of time to be able to really think about the questions that Philippa asks. You might want to pause halfway through to consider things a little more deeply before coming back to it. Link this into the other work of high performing people and use the art of ‘journaling’ as a place to keep all your reflections.

Before you start, if you’d like, take a minute to explore your ‘I am’.

  • How do you perceive yourself?
  • What would you like to become?
  • How would you like others to see you?
  • How do you expect to see yourself in the future?
  • And, how do you feel others see you?
