The hidden muscles
The pelvic floor is the name given to the supportive sling of muscles and connective tissue that runs from the coccyx (tailbone) to the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis.
The pelvic floor's primary function is to support the pelvic organs such as the bladder, bowel, rectum and womb. They protect these organs from external harm and provide support when standing and active. The pelvic floor can be considered as the ‘hammock’ with the pelvic organs on top.
The pelvic floor must contract, relax, and adapt to pressure changes. The muscles prevent leakages when coughing, sneezing, laughing and during physical activity movements such as jumping, landing, running and fast changes of direction. While not life-threatening, it can be extremely embarrassing and affect women’s confidence when training.
