Coach Developer Conversations (EP 4): Rus Smith - A Local Journey through and into Coach Developing

Rus Smith (Street Games, The FA and Coach Developer of the Year 2017) talks about his journey through and into coach developing. The discussion covers the challenges of credibility, the value of lived experiences and how to overcome some of the barriers to engagement.

Helping young people from areas of deprivation into coaching is Rus’ day job, but it’s developing people that is his passion. Seeing change, empowerment and impact is a powerful output, and something that working in the community is great at bringing about. What skills are required to have a positive influence in that area? For Rus, it all starts with getting to know people, building a rapport, making a connection with the individual. What is their purpose? Why are they doing what they’re doing?
