The ECB’s All Stars Cricket Model

Register/Log in to access: The All Stars programme has revolutionised the way cricket is played by – and coached to – 5–8 year olds. Richard Smyth looks at this celebrated sporting project

All Stars Cricket, an innovative programme devised by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), aims to change young children’s attitudes towards the sport.

Even in the age of the turbo-charged T20 Blast, IPL-style Twenty20, getting kids involved in cricket at an early age can be an uphill struggle.

Not so for All Stars Cricket.

Launched in 2017 and designed to provide a fun playing environment for kids aged 5-8, All Stars Cricket was a roaring success: over the course of the summer, more than 37,000 children attended the sessions and took their first steps as junior cricketers.

“It’s no secret that cricket was probably struggling,” says the ECB's National Programmes Training and Development Manager Jason Russell-Jones.

“As with most sports, we’re seeing a significant drop-off in young people taking part in the game; across the UK, nearly every sport was seeing a drop-off in kids under the age of 14 playing team sports. So there was a need to create a programme that introduced kids at a young age."
