Establishing Trust in Your Coaching Environment

Laura Purdy shares a coaching story to highlight the importance of trust and how significant it can be to an individual’s experiences of physical activity and sport

Frankie saw an advert for an ‘introduction to running’ club that met weekly in their local park. Frankie wasn’t particularly active but appreciated the importance of physical activity and thought that running might fit into their lifestyle as it didn’t require any equipment and could be done almost anywhere.

They showed up for their first session and were greeted by the coach and several other participants of various ages and abilities. The friendliness of the group and its focus on participation (as opposed to performance) immediately put Frankie at ease. Gone were the memories of running in PE lessons at school with a teacher shouting at them to go faster and to put more effort in.
