Alex Lewis came to EMS-specialist Tom Corcoran with the challenge of preparing him physically to climb mountains. Alex’s unique needs made it one of Tom’s most ground-breaking professional tasks
Alex nearly died in 2013. What he had thought was a common cold turned out to be a devastating Strep A infection, a rare bacterial infection that causes a person’s flesh to eat itself. He was given just days to live.
However, Alex miraculously survived, undergoing over 120 hours of intense surgery. He had to have all four limbs amputated.
Six years later, I met Alex as he was preparing to take on a number of intense physical challenges, raising awareness for his charity, The Alex Lewis Trust. They raise funds for wheelchairs, home adjustments and prosthetics for amputees.
Alex has plans to climb one of Africa’s tallest mountains, the Ras Dashen in Ethiopia.
But that’s not all: in 2020, Alex plans to travel over 800km in 10 days across the Gobi Desert. He hopes to use the money raised to open a wheelchair factory in Ethiopia.
