Creating a Mental Model of Performance

Downloadable resources to be used alongside the Talking Talent: Developing the What – Curriculum Building video. If you don’t have much experience in creating mental models of performance, then this resource can help you get to grips with the key principles and put your learning into practice by creating your own

A mental model of performance shows the key skills, qualities and behaviours that you want to see in your athletes, and what they need to be able to demonstrate to succeed in their sport. This holistic approach includes mental skills, physical preparation, and technical/tactical skills, all of which you should consider in your planning.

In Talking Talent: Developing the What – Curriculum Building, Chris Low, Steve McKeown and David Piggott of Leeds Beckett University explore the use of technical, tactical and psycho-motor frameworks as thinking tools to build your sport-specific performance model and support your planning. 

During the video, Chris, Steve and David explain how to create a mental model of performance and walk you through several worked examples of what one could look like. While you’re watching, it would be a good idea to open the resources below and decide how you can apply the principles discussed in the video to create your own model. 

Once you have watched the video, put your learning into practice by downloading and printing off the blank template and having a go at developing your own mental model of performance, applicable to your coaching practice, athletes, environment and sport. If you’re new to this, the template will help to simplify the process while you get accustomed to the different stages. You can then begin to build more complex and layered models.
