Six of the Best: Creating an Environment to Flourish

England Hockey under-18s girls' coach Sarah Kelleher offers her advice on establishing the best environment for your players to thrive

  1. Create a psychological safe space so you challenge players to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
  2. Value them as a person – see their uniqueness and potential.
  3. Help them integrate and belong to the environment that you’re creating.
  4. Bring stimulus on and off the pitch, to get everyone to think, but think differently.
  5. Have a focus on character and mindset, to set them up for stressful, high-pressure moments.
  6. Make the environment, the experience of being there, fun, memorable and engaging!
