Six Ways to Keep Clients Motivated

How do you motivate your clients, considering that they likely all have very different reasons for attending your sessions? Richard Jones discovers six recommended ways to maintain motivation

Reasons for getting or staying physically fit often vary widely from person to person. Experts suggest that to keep such a wide variety of people motivated, it’s a good idea to ensure that your sessions meet the needs of autonomy (feeling that actions are self-directed), competence (feeling capable and confident to perform an activity) and relatedness (having enough social support).

Six ways to drive motivation

  1. Goals. Get specific and simple. Goals should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. Also, make sure they cover the short and long term.
  2. Surroundings. Every great training facility has a great environment with great people. Create a culture of success where everyone is motivated and wants to improve themselves and those around them.
  3. Purpose. Explain the purpose and objectives behind a programme to help clients ‘buy-in' to the plan.
  4. Look back. Remind the client of where they started. Sometimes, along the path to a big goal, your clients (or you) lose sight of where they started.
  5. Fun factor. Make workouts fun. Your client may not come to training with the view that working out can be enjoyable.
  6. Technology. Find software that allows you to build training and nutrition plans. It should also allow you to challenge and set goals. And don’t forget your online presence!
