Helping Our Young People Make Successful Transitions

During their sporting experiences, children will go through a lot of changes and transitions. In this article, Gordon MacLelland shares his thoughts on how a coach and parent can support these

Many of the transitions children face on their sporting journey will be through choice, others may be forced upon them and some may happen unexpectedly.

Transitions may include:

  • a change of coach
  • participating in a new sport and joining a new club
  • a change of team
  • moving environments within a talent pathway
  • progression from age grade sport to open age
  • being deselected from a pathway or professional sport programme
  • long-term injuries
  • leaving a sport for good.

We all enjoy consistency and comfort, and change can often lead to a mixture of emotions.
