How to Start Conversations About the Menstrual Cycle

Bringing up the menstrual cycle in conversation with female athletes can feel awkward or uncomfortable. In the sixth resource in a series, the Welsh Institute of Performance Science’s Natalie Brown shares her experience and insight on how to successfully start the conversation

If you feel uncomfortable speaking about the menstrual cycle with your athletes, remember they may not feel at ease speaking to you either! They may feel embarrassed or secretive. But while it is common for the menstrual cycle not to be openly discussed, it is a normal biological process that can cause physical and psychological symptoms, impacting on participation and performance in sport.

The key is to create an open and supportive environment with the individuals that you coach. As part of that, it’s important to encourage conversation about the menstrual cycle when necessary.

Reflect

Are you comfortable with speaking to your participants about their menstrual cycle?

Do you think your participants are comfortable talking to you about their menstrual cycle?

Have you previously had any conversations with females you coach about the menstrual cycle?
