Lean on Me: How Mentors Can Provide Support and Aid Progress

Charlotte Potterton highlights the positive impact of mentoring in facilitating development and greater self-awareness, based on the keynote given by Head Coach of England girls’ U18 hockey team Sarah Kelleher and her mentor, coach developer John Fletcher

At the 2019 UK Coaching Conference, Sarah Kelleher and John Fletcher gave a keynote on establishing a ‘flourishing’ environment that enables people to thrive. During their conversation, they emphasised the positive contribution that mentoring can make to coaching practice.

Towards the beginning of the discussion, Sarah emphasised that being mentored throughout her career has been crucial to her successful development within and beyond her coaching practice. In Sarah’s experience, working with mentors on an ongoing basis during her career has made an indispensable contribution to her achievements and development.
