A team of researchers from Germany set out to broaden the existing knowledge base on home advantage, the belief that games played at home are easier to win than games played in front of an away crowd. They discovered that coaches have higher expectations for the outcomes of home games, which affects their coaching practice.
Research into a variety of team sports, countries and eras previously discovered that home games are won more often than away games. However, theories on how and why (and into home advantage) tended to be explored only through archival information.
The team based in Germany took a wholly different approach.
