Former Chair of the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Clarke Carlisle told us at the Mind, Mental Health in Sport and Physical Activity Conference that coaches – and anyone involved in sport and physical activity – have a responsibility to learn how to recognise, respond to and support people with mental health problems.
Detailing his own struggles with and recovery from depression, the former professional footballer eloquently discusses the positive impact of sport and physical activity on mental health. He elaborates on effective strategies for supporting mental health recovery, and praises the ‘Mental Health Awareness for Sport and Physical Activity+’ online course that UK Coaching has developed in partnership with Mind, which he says will give people a deeper understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues relating to mental health.
