Frank Dick OBE: Full Keynote Presentation

British Athletics’ former Director of Coaching shared his experience of what it takes to be a great coach at the 2019 UK Coaching Conference

Frank Dick delivers his framework for developing world-class coaches at every level of the coaching workforce.

He says:

  • there should be no hierarchy amongst coaches and talks about creating “a parity of esteem”
  • discusses his three ‘Responsibilities’ of being a coach
  • explains why there is a pressing need to create a “culture of creative candour” in coaching, as only through honesty can you have accountability and build trust with participants.

Other topics covered include:

  • coaches’ over-reliance on technological assessment, meaning they are not practising their critical observation skills
  • the need for coaches to give more priority to behavioural values as part of the coach-athlete relationship
  • reveals his Step Ladder of Success, from embryonic coach to sage mentor.
