Talking Talent: How to Locate Potential

Dr. Ross Tucker, Professor of Exercise Physiology at the University of Free State in South Africa, suggests a method for locating athletes with the potential to perform at a high level that starts with identifying future aims

In this video, Dr. Ross Tucker:

  • explains that the difficulty with talent identification is largely that different people all have different ideas of what talent is, as well as how potential manifests
  • discusses an approach to talent identification based on working back from the intended achievement to determine an athlete’s current position
  • lays out key questions to ask firstly in identifying potential and then in relation to actions to take post-identification
  • identifies the impact of budgeting on talent identification.
