What Motivates Young People to be Active?

The second animation in the UK Coaching and Sport England young people series looks at their motivations for being active. It includes coaching tips on how to plan and deliver sessions to meet young people’s needs

All young people are different and will have varying reasons for taking part in a coaching session based on different experiences, personality, and lifestyle factors.

Recent insight from Sport England asked young people why they take part in sport or activity.

The most common reasons young people gave included:

  • meet new people
  • hang out with friends
  • get in shape
  • be healthy
  • for fun and enjoyment
  • learn new skills.

The challenge for coaches, activators and leaders is how to plan and deliver sessions to meet these reasons for taking part. Use the video to help you consider 'What motivates young people to be active?'

Read the accompanying guide for more tips on how to plan and deliver sessions to meet young people’s needs.
Then discover more in the remaining three videos and accompanying guides in the series, designed to help you develop as a coach and meet the needs of young people.
