This eLearning course will increase your knowledge, confidence, and skills so that you can coach blind and partially sighted people effectively in your sports and activity sessions.

Through helpful tips, practical solutions, and vibrant videos*, this course will support you to grow your coaching by giving you the essential knowledge, ideas, and practical solutions that you can apply to enable blind and partially sighted people to take part in your sessions.

You will not only gain an understanding of the challenges and barriers that blind and partially sighted people face when trying to take part in sport and physical activity, but also help you can support them to remove and overcome those barriers so that they can enjoy meaningful opportunities to try something new or take part in the activities and sports that they love.

In this course you will:

  • Gain a greater understanding of sight loss and eye conditions.
  • Explore practical solutions to barriers to participation and help meet individual needs.
  • Explore some of the safety considerations to ensure that you’re providing a fully accessible and inclusive environment for blind and partially sighted people.
  • Learn how to make adaptations to specific elements of session planning and delivery using the STEP Tool.
  • Understand how to communicate effectively and guide individuals.

Sport-Specific Module Options

There are four 'bolt-on' modules available for this course. 

Building on the core learning outcomes, they contain additional sport-specific information useful for people coaching:

  • tennis
  • swimming
  • goalball
  • football.

Lasting an hour and a half, this topical module will increase your knowledge and confidence to ensure that you can coach blind and partially sighted people effectively at your tennis sessions, supporting and empowering you to create great inclusive sessions where everyone taking part feels comfortable and can enjoy and benefit from the experience.

Why is this module important?

This module has been created as part of the See Sport Differently Programme, a Sport England-funded initiative delivered by British Blind Sport and the RNIB. The programme aims to increase the number of blind and partially sighted people who are physically active in England.

Give feedback to shape the support we offer

At the end of the eLearning, you will find a feedback survey. The results of the survey will be used to ensure that our work continues to fulfil the needs of coaches and activity leaders to help provide inclusive activity for all.

Lasting an hour and a half, this topical module will increase your knowledge and confidence to ensure that you can coach blind and partially sighted people effectively at your swimming sessions, supporting and empowering you to create great inclusive sessions where everyone taking part feels comfortable and can enjoy and benefit from the experience.

  • This course is suitable for anyone looking to support blind and partially sighted people to take part in sport and physical activity.

  • This course is self-paced and lasts approximately 1 hour. You will be able to access it whenever you want, at a time that fits in with your lifestyle.

  • You have access to this course for 12 months from the point of enrolment.

  • Should you need any help with navigating through the course, our experienced advisors are on hand to offer any assistance.

  • This course works on desktop, tablets, and mobile phones.
